Background

A transgender boy beat up two girls in a girl's restroom at Memorial High School

On October 26, 2022, at Memorial High School in Edmond, OK a transgender boy assaulted two girls in the girl’s restroom.

The Edmond police were called and charges were filed.

Most parents became aware of this incident only when Superintendent Gruenwald sent out a video on December 16th, 2022, almost 2 months after the incident occurred, not immediately after the fact.

According to the superintendent’s video (click here to watch) students being enrolled in high schools in Oklahoma don’t have to show their birth certificates to enroll. (Their birth certificate shows their sex)

According to a state school board official, this is incorrect.

In early 2022 one Edmond school board member even addressed this issue in an email stating, ”Children who are struggling with gender identity or are transitioning have been

supported in the schools for well over a decade. We have and will continue to partner

with their families to provide safe and appropriate settings for their growth and

development. We have not found our continuum of practices to be problematic for either

these children nor their classmates.”

Oklahoma has a law in place that does not allow boys in the girls bathroom, locker rooms, or sports. By not seeking to find the sex of this boy did Edmond Public Schools violate that law?

The parent of the assaulted student filed charges against the district on May 25, 2023.  They are seeking $75,000 in damages.
